During Water Safety Week, lesson plans will have a heavy focus on survival skills appropriate for each individual level, focusing on teaching students how to solve real life aquatic situations using self-rescue skills such as floating, calling for help, treading water and sculling.
Start the conversation with your child to reinforce these critical lifesaving messages. Ask them what they learn during Water Safety Week and how these lessons may apply to places you frequent.
Conversation Starters
- Why would you use a feet first entry into deep water?
- Name 3 survival strokes
- List 3 ways you could keep yourself afloat in the water without an aid
- What are the different ways you could rescue a person in trouble?
- List places around the home which could be potential water dangers
- List three safety rules you should follow when swimming at the pool
- If you get into trouble in the water, how do you attract attention?
- Where should you swim at the beach?
What colour are the flags you swim between at the beach?
